VISUAL-KEI ROCK STAR by Shiree McCarver
Visual-Kei Rock Star by
Shiree McCarver Urban Seduction, Book
1 Lulu Contemporary, I/R Reviewed by Patrice
F.
Sadie worked hard
in her career as a dancer and choreographer after learning the hard
way that she had no real family and that love was a lie, a fairy
tale. Now she is faced with a dilemma in the form of her best
friend’s younger brother, Suburu. Her sexual awareness
of him is taboo for so many reasons. For countless years
they’ve shared a dark secret, forming a connection that will never
be broken by time or distance.
Suburu is a Japanese rising star in the
entertainment industry; a child prodigy with a tragic and lonely
history. He is also a man with a desire and hunger that can
only be appeased by Sadie. His climb to the top as a
visual-kei artist won’t be easy but he is willing to do whatever it
takes to have the woman he loves by his side.
As a long-time visual-kei fan, I couldn’t
wait to sink my teeth into this juicy novel. This story is
written by a die-hard vis-kei fan for hardcore vis-kei fans
everywhere. Just about every band named, songs included, is or
has been a favorite for me. I could add a few to the mix along
with suggestions about the leading man. For me, Suburu is a
delectable mix of Buck-Tick frontman Atsushi Sakurai and J-rock
guitar god miyavi. Of course, this left Sadie’s
development open to a number of possibilities.
Now here’s where readers may run into a few
problems. Anyone not familiar with this music genre might feel
lost and sometimes stumble a bit. However, there’s enough
amazing description and explanation that it will also trigger an
interest in the bands, music, and scene, especially since it has
grown away from being frowned upon as a style of music and look for
dorks! The fact that it’s now embraced in the US and other
countries outside of Japan is proof that there is a
revival.
The novel spans roughly a large number of
years chronicling a pair of lost and damaged souls who find one
another, love, lose, and regain it all. It’s filled with
realistic elements that breathe life into the plot and
interaction. There’s healing, redemption and forgiveness for
the lovers and the Chouda family, after a storm of greed, lust,
betrayal, suffering, deception and intrigue. In contrast,
Sadie’s relations are left somewhere on the horizon surrounded by
shadowy dysfunction. I never got a sense of closure there just
abandonment. There were a couple of the usual predictable
villains you find in any romance drama, until the tables were
turned, knocking them off their antagonist perch.
My biggest issue is the entire storyline is
bogged down with endless dialogue flooding the narrative with
explanations and revelations that could have been revealed by
showing the reader. I could appreciate the author’s creativity
and writing better if there were less long-winded arguments, endless
phone conversations, and never-ending discussions. Repetition
and the fact you have characters that already know one another’s
history openly discussing the past clutters up everything until
you’re not sure who’s telling the story at some points
Another issue some readers may find disconcerting and disruptive is
the constant use of Japanese and translations.
Like pieces of a jig-saw puzzle, the author
does a superb job at fitting Sadie and Suburu together. Sadie
is assertive, tough, career driven and loyal. Like many
successful women hungry for marriage and a family, her career
becomes the one thing sustainable. Through Suburu’s
open-hearted acceptance she is able to relive everything that was
taken from her earlier, and to find what she was searching for the
entire time. The way she guides him and builds his confidence
and helps him ease into his sexuality is moving, and brought a warm
glow to my heart.
Suburu is passionate, innocent, and a prodigy
eager to love the one person who accepted him and saved him.
Through detailed descriptions, I could see, smell, touch and hear
him. The sex scenes can peel the ink off the pages! His
youthful earnestness and sincerity was endearing, captivating as he
evolves, shifts gears from youth to man, and knocks down every
stumbling block.
There are countless obstacles the author
addresses openly, unabashedly, I was floored by her directness and
most appreciative. Few authors are willing to touch and openly
discuss the issues of racism and prejudice with ugly honesty.
For some this will be a controversial read in more ways than
one.
Visual Kei Rock
Star is a rock-n-roll wet dream of a novel, filled
with rollercoaster highs and lows, and a melodramatic ending that
will coax a smile through your tears. This extraordinary tale
of a May-December romance between a Japanese visual-kei musician and
a Black dancer/choreographer pushes the boundaries of erotic
romantic fiction by spreading out into unchartered literary waters,
thumbing its nose at naysayers and the less imaginative. This
author has created an original niche in a sub-genre and it keeps
getting better and
better.

“Rich Girls
Cry Too”
Elizabeth
Dickens is about to enter a marriage of convenience to
please her father, and most important, to suppress the
past. When first love Yashiro Tezuka reappears on
the scene, she’s pushed to make a choice about what she
truly wants and is forced to battle the demons of her
past to reevaluate her future.
This
unconventional tale is ahead of its time and an ode to
many possibilities. Just when I thought there was
no room to push the erotic fiction envelope and soar to
new heights of understanding and the true meaning of
what makes a soul mate, Shiree McCarver proves me
wrong. After reading this wonderful tale of hope,
forgiveness, unconditional love and salvation, it feels
oh, so good to be totally wide off the mark. I
simply refuse to reveal anything more about this
story. Enough said.
“Club
Iridescence”
Ancient
vampire, Nefera Hiraoka, must return to the place of her
enslavement and exile, Japan, to save her eternal mate,
Hiroshi. The African huntress learns that her
beloved is fatally wounded. She challenges the
edict of the Japanese vampire council by returning, and
must appeal to the one who may prove to be more foe than
ally.
Vampire
eroticism meets paranormal intrigue in a tale of
passion, family, and relationships. Nefera,
Hiroshi, and Manaka make it all happen in modern day
Japan. The long ties of their past bind them in a
dark dance of lust, obsession, and duty. I’m
grateful the story ends warmly. It’s a bit chatty
at times, with very few surprises, and rather
reminiscent of LA Banks on occasion, but all in all, I
had no real complaints. The world building and
characterization was good, believable, and served the
purpose of the plot.
“Sayonara
Teacher”
It is time for
Katie Jones to return to her former life after teaching
abroad in Japan. Sadly, she will go home a
thirty-six year old virgin, pining for passion and love.
When the shy African American instructor receives an
invite to an exclusive club called Club Heaven, she is
swept into the midst of ‘angels’ who know everything
about pleasing a woman. It is one night of surrendering
to her fantasies where she is taken to the heights of
carnal bliss by a male host who knows the meaning of
paradise.
The final
story in this exotic anthology is sheer contemporary
fantasy, where the classic character of the lonely
spinster in an exotic locale is swept away by a romantic
encounter that takes a walk on the wild side. This
was one delightfully steamy and sweet tale to touch the
heart of anyone that has been Katie, knows her, and
understands her. No matter who you are, you’ll be
cheering her on while wishing you where in her
place!
Dirty Little
Secrets is a progressive anthology of the times,
where east meets west to take the reader in a new
direction, and where love overcomes all obstacles of
race, class, culture, and birth. Sizzling,
innovative, and provocative, this steamy triage of
wickedly stormy stories will thrill you, kick start your
heart, and force you to squeeze out a few sighs and
tears. It’s where Black women and Asian men come
together in a jumble of lust, romance, and angst to find
fulfillment and a taste of HEA. Shiree McCarver
actively pushes the limits of this genre with her
creativity and insightful writing. It’s an
experience when any author lets their love show, and I’m
pleased to say Ms. McCarver’s connection to her
characters and their world is written on her
introspective sleeve. You don’t want to miss this
original happily recommended

Charlene is a journalist, musician,
lyricist, and bestselling romance novelist. Once married to Jason
James, a Japanese hard-driven rock star who committed suicide,
Charlene wrote that segment of her life into fiction in Blu's Diary.
Now she has the opportunity to mutate the novel into an
international miniseries event, and she intends on maintaining
artistic control. However, the backers think differently and insist
on promoting Japanese pop icon Kane, a young man fifteen years
Charlene's junior, for the part of Blu. Charlie doesn't think it
will fly, assuming Kane is an upscale, well-bred, arrogant star who
became a pop idol at age twelve. Kane is more than meets the eye,
though; although he didn't have a street upbringing like the movie's
protagonist, he's had more than enough grief and abuse in his short
life to make him a shoe-in for the role.
J-POP LOVE SONG is an astoundingly and
unexpectedly deep novel. I expected something on the order of
frothy; instead I found an emphasis on character, backstory, and
plot worthy of a good mainstream novel. J-POP LOVE SONG is truly a
book worth reading, a page turner, and one that will linger in the
reader's mind. I felt throughout as if I truly knew the characters
of Charlie and Kane, not just on a surface introductory level, but
through and through. Author Shiree McCarver peels the layers of her
protagonists like an onion, and she's not afraid to confront the
multicultural issues and taboos present in this story. Charlene is
African-American, widow of a Japanese, and Kane is also Japanese.
Additionally, their romance presents as the "older-woman,
younger-man" model, as Charlie is forty-one and Kane nearly
twenty-five. Truly there are three protagonists in this story:
Charlie, Kane, and Charlie's deceased husband Jason, but even the
secondary characters such as Kane's manager, his father, and
Charlie's manager-best friend, Abe, are skillfully and excitingly
drawn.

McCarver's terrific story brings together two
cultures, all the while maintaining a vivid Tokyo setting. She
deals with issues that include Charlene's past with her deceased
husband and a relationship with a significant age difference.
And Kane is one hot tamale! This terrific read is just busy

Multicultural
Ms. McCarver takes you on a romantic journey that travels between
Japan and the United States. Her heroine is Charlene Alfred, an
author that has a best seller that is set to become an international
movie. Charlene has written a love story that involves a Japanese
rock star and his African American love. What people don't realize
is that the story actually captures her love life before the death
of her husband. So as the search for the star of the movie appears
to be the latest rock star of Japan, she becomes irate. She doesn't
believe that Kane has the right stuff to make her movie a success
and besides he is young and a spoiled rich kid, at least that's what
she thought. Charlene soon finds out that her beliefs are far from
the truth as they meet before he is selected for the
part.
Kane is twenty-four and hot on the music charts today.
But what he really wants is a chance at being the lead in Charlene's
movie and possibly more to her. He understands that he is not her
choice for the movie but because of vivid dreams that he has had
about her he knows she is the woman for him. She's older than Kane
so in her heart and mind the two can never be together. While trying
to convince her to give him a try, many things are uncovered about
his past. What neither of them counts on is that their pasts are
mingled together through his unscrupulous manager. With love on
their side Charlene and Kane work out their differences. But his
manager isn't satisfied until he goes too far, and nothing is the
same for the two again.
The story has a lot going on and the
author has a good way of wrapping it up. It's a good story that
shows you what happens when culture and age crosses boundaries where
love is involved.

A Long Song To
Experience, July 21, 2008
Shiree McCarver brings readers a very interesting story of
romance in J-Pop Love Song. Charlene Alfred is about to embark
on a new career. She is already a successful songwriter and
best-selling romance author. Her first book, Blu's Diary, is
being made into a motion picture and she is in the middle of
screening actors for the lead male role. However, the
financial backers have already decided who would have the
role, Japanese pop star, Kane. Kane is young, sexy and perfect
for the role. But Charlene believes he is too young and
inexperienced to portray Blu's true character.
Kane
has been performing on the stage since the age of 12. Eager to
get from under the thumb of his manager/mentor, Takusa, Kane
would do almost anything to be a part of this film. There is
also something about Charlene that has been haunting him since
he was 16 years old and he read her book. After convincing
Charlene to come to Japan to meet him in person, Kane realizes
that he is in love with her and he sets out to win her heart.
Set in Tokyo, McCarver introduces readers to Japanese
culture. This story is about an African American woman and
Japanese Man. It is about an older woman and a younger man. It
is about western cultures mixing with eastern cultures. It is
about forbidden love. It is about secrets and traditions and
so much more. McCarver packed a lot in 280 pages but it was
well worth reading. I cheered and cried with Charlene and Kane
as they discovered their love for each other and struggled
with secrets that tried to keep them apart. McCarver did an
excellent job of explaining the culture and language for
readers. This book is recommended for book clubs that are
looking for a different type of romance that will spark plenty
of discussion.

Having a pampered Japanese pop star
play the role of Japanese star of her best selling
novel isn’t what Charlene Alfred envisioned when
she started the tedious task of bringing Blu to
life on screen. Blu’s
Dairy has a special place in her heart and
having her dream dictated by a bunch of Japanese
investors is something it looks as if she will
have to take or risk all her hard work going done
the drain.
The hottest act to hit Japan in
years, Kane is a star that has been molded since
he was a young teenager into a singing sensation
that leaves women all over Asia screaming for his
next song. He’s been a huge follower of Charlene’s
for years and is adamant about playing the role of
Blu from his favorite novel.
When the two finally meet nothing
could have prepared Charlene for the instant
attraction. An attraction built over intimate
conversations about their lives has turned into a
situation that could ruin her project and destroy
Kane’s career. For in the land where culture and
background is everything what can a 41-year-old
African American woman and a 24-year-old Japanese
pop-star really have in
common?
Two people, worlds apart in culture
and years apart in age will find they have more in
common than their love for music. The night lights
of Japan has more to chance at something great,
with it comes lies, deceit and a shared past
Charlene couldn’t have couldn’t have written if
she tried.
Impressive is too light of a word to
describe the masterpiece J-Pop Love
Song turned out to be. I wouldn’t in my
wildest dreams have come up with a May-December
couple that not only pushed the age taboo but
demolished the cultural one as well. As a
successful African American in a world where black
women are not always seen as profitable, Charlene
has not only been a success but is well known in
the entertainment industry for her gift of song
and the written word. Matching her with an Asian
lead, Kane, who is the star of the dreams of
teenagers all over Asia is a risk that could have
sunk this novel quicker than the Titanic. So
imagine how enthralled I was as page after page
not only did this union seemed plausible bit it
turned out to be a perfect fit. Shiree McCarver
was able to take the two people from groups who
forever seem to be on the bottom of the dating
pools of life and turn them into a loveable
couple. A couple that was arousing and a pleasure
to experience. What really made this story one of
the best I’ve read lately is the drama and
intrigue and excitement which was just as
gratifying as the romance. You’re given the first
husband who was a hot Japanese artist that winds
up committing suicide, the sordid history of
Kane’s upbringing which has to date been
suppressed by his manager and the whispers of
something sinister at play as the soul of a dead
rocker seems intent on making its presence known.
What more can you ask for and this and the
believable love that Charlene and Kane shared is
why J-Pop Love
Song has smashed it’s way onto my
September Recommended Read list. I Joyfully
Recommend it for lovers of Interracial Romance but
also for readers who want to step outside the norm
and see there are other couples out there who
don’t fit the Hollywood mode that are just as
enticing and propelling.

Here's my review of this great
interracial romance I finished last night:
I can definitively
say I have never read a romance novel quite like this. Ms. McCarver
really accomplished something with this wonderful story. Sauda is a
heroine that you will come to admire, will laugh with, and will cry
with. Her journey is unforgettable. Ethan is a hero that will steal
your heart away. What I really loved about this story was how
three-dimensional Sauda and Ethan are. Their love is tangible and
poignant. It reaches off the page and into your mind and heart. It
doesn't matter that Ethan shouldn't fall in love with a Blackamoor
assassin who is clearly not a suitable wife. It doesn't matter that
Sauda is a foreigner whose freedom is not her own, and thus
shouldn't even consider falling for the golden, beautiful lord. It
happens anyway. And the development of this affair is incredible to
read. At times, I felt like I would be overwhelmed with despair,
knowing in my heart that this couldn't end well, but hoping that Ms.
McCarver would manage to pull off the happy ending I craved.
Well, we do get our happy ending, but you should read it to see how
it unfolds.
Prejudice is an ugly thing. This story shows how
a worthy, incredible individual can be judged and maligned for the
simple characteristics of being of another faith, dark skin color,
and having hair that is curly instead of straight, despite traits
that show her to be an excellent person. Her good heart and her
sense of honor mean nothing when someone cannot look past what is so
different. The great thing about this story is that from the first
moment, Ethan looks at the outside and the inside and has a moment
of clarity that this is the woman that he loves. His heart had been
broken by the loss of his young wife in childbirth and his
subsequent slavery in a Turkish prison, in which unspeakable things
were done to him. Life means little to him, other than the freedom
of sailing the seas, although he knows he will have to eventually
marry to ensure his family's earldom secure. When he sees Sauda,
it's like he comes alive again. From that point on, he is very
focused on having her, in any way he can.
Sauda sees the
beautiful Englishman and knows he's not for her. Her life has been
nothing but death and discipline. She is a very skilled assassin who
has had to seduce men to get close enough to kill. Her heart is
merely an organ that pumps blood through her body. Love does not
enter into the equation for her life. But love finds her, and a
passion that she had never known.
This is a very raw and
earthy romance, but at the same time, sublimely beautiful. Set
during the Elizabethan period, you are privy to the very raunchy
natures of Elizabethans, and not spared some of the less pleasanter
aspects of living in the 16th century, but it works very well. It
felt so authentic, and Ms. McCarver does a great job with the
language and the terminology for this period. It is more than clear
that she has done careful research and has a love for this period.
As a lifelong reader of historical romances and a woman of color, It
was great to see a heroine of color living and finding love within
this time period. I was drawn into this story and I felt like I was
right there in the late 1500s during Queen Elizabeth's reign.
The love scenes were tender yet vivid and very raw. The
powerful chemistry between Sauda and Ethan really blazes in their
private moments. There is an element of time slipping away from the
starcrossed lovers as Ethan will have to marry soon and Sauda must
leave to stay one step ahead of the hunters who want to take her
back to her owner. I hated that aspect, but it brought dramatic
tension and poignancy to the storyline. I wanted them to run away
into the sunset together, but I could see how that would be a
selfish thing and not feasible for either of them.
Sauda is
very convincing as a formidable female warrior and assassin. She
shows the discipline and skill of a woman who was heartlessly
trained from the young age of eight to kill and to kill
effortlessly. She has no moments that cause a lapse in her
credibility as a warrior woman. Yet at the same time, she shows a
humanity and a capacity for love that gives her the depth that I
want to see in a romance heroine. She is definitely a great
heroine for those readers who like to see a woman who can handle
herself.
Although Ethan's friend Lucian annoyed me with his
narrow-mindedness for some time in this story, I began to see why he
was so fixated on his view of what was good for Ethan (and thinking
that Sauda wasn't it). He got my attention and make me anxious to
read his story and see him conquered by love in the most unlikely of
packages. I also enjoyed seeing the interactions with Thomas,
Ethan's younger brother, as well as Sir Nichols, and Mary, Ethan's
former nursemaid.
This book took me away and seduced my
senses. It kept me guessing, as I truly didn't know how things would
end. There was a complexity to this plot that really did challenge
my thought processes to see where things would go. The action scenes
were well done, mixing swordfighting and martial arts. I loved that
you did get to see Sauda show her abilities. Yet you also see that
Ethan is a warrior in his own right. I am so glad that I got the
opportunity to see this beautiful love story unfold between two
people that are so very different, yet are soulmates in every way.
Bravo, Ms. McCarver. Danielle Hill aka Oak

is a genius! She has managed to bring history together with the
present mixed with fiction and truth. Not only that, but Ms.
McCarver has managed to turn this reviewer into a Lykan reading

Her story
Forever Moonlight is a beautifully haunting story of the
immortality, strength and perfection of true love and darkest depth
that owns evil. With the same breath, the main characters, Justus
and Sera, brought a teasingly sensual air to the story that is
weaved so magically.
Ms.
McCarver’s spin on who Jack
the Ripper was brings a fresh twist to the life of the
infamous serial killer and with stunning ease she managed to shock
me at every turn. Forever Moonlight is wonderfully written,
thoroughly researched and therefore brings

REVIEW!

Forever Moonlight
A top researcher of wolves with everything to
live for, Sera Tibbs has been given a death sentence when she is
diagnosed with a fatal illness. Angry, upset and losing hope, Sera
decides to live her last days secluded and alone. Providence
always has a habit of stepping in and does so with a 6’4 virgin
shifter who swears he is her fated lover and able to save her from
the illness ravishing her body. Lykian, Justus Apollon has been
roaming the world for over a century trying to capture a killer
who has eluded him and his powerful skills. His chance meeting
with his mate makes him see the world in a new light and brings
hope. Justus will do anything in his power to keep Sera safe as he
helps her come to grip with her role in his life.
Forever Moonlight started off a little slow and
bumpy for me. With a couple parts of the beginning not quite
connecting, I was a little concerned on how the rest of the story
would pan out. I’m happy to say as I continued to read the story
it started to grab hold and soon I was enjoying an interesting
relationship between a talented academic who connected with wolves
and her Lykian lover and protector. I really enjoyed how Shiree
McCarver added almost childlike glee to her hero at times,
which offset the beast within him. Sera, was your typical
scientist, so enamored with Justus and the chance to learn and
help his kind; she took the knowledge of his world and people with
class. Ms. McCarver has a great story here and I hope to
see a story out soon showcasing Justus’ brother and his mate. That
should be a doozie and one I don’t want to miss.
